Fences and gates, Portland area

Good fences. Gates that still close.

Fences are where Urban Edge started. Cedar boards on pressure-treated, cedar or steel posts, with gates braced to stay square, so the line stays straight and the gate still latches years from now.

Hog wire fence panels in wood frames on each side of a wood arbor, an Urban Edge job

    Hog wire

4 feet tall. Black welded-wire panels in a cedar frame with a 2x4 top plate and 1x2 trim all around. Keeps pets in and leaves the view open.

Horizontal-board driveway gates, an Urban Edge job from 2022

    Gates

Braced to stay square, on posts set deeper than the rest.

The builder and the style drawings are design concepts. Posts are drawn at each panel so you can see them; on most styles the boards cover them from the good side. The hog wire and gate photos are Urban Edge jobs. Add-ons we also do: post caps.

    Questions

    What people ask first.

How tall can my fence be?

It depends on your city and on which yard it's in. Front yards usually allow less height than backyards. We check your city's limit before we quote.

Who decides where the fence goes on the property line?

You do, and it's worth being sure where the line is. If it's unclear, a survey settles it. We build exactly where you mark.

How long does a cedar fence last?

A well-built cedar fence in the Portland area usually lasts about 15 to 20 years, and the posts are what give out first, not the boards. Read the full answer.

    Steel or wood posts?

Our fences come standard on pressure-treated wood posts. Steel posts are an upgrade: they don't rot, so they outlast wood posts in Portland's wet soil. Compare them.

    Are thicker boards worth it?

Our standard board is 5/8-inch cedar. 3/4-inch boards are 20 percent more wood, so they stay flatter and hold their fasteners better. See the difference.
